A Fishing Adventure

My dad offered to take us kids on a little fishing trip today, so I obliged. I'm not one for the outdoors, in fact, hiking and camping are far from my list of things I enjoy doing, but I don't mind a quick fishing trip here and there. I do enjoy fishing a calm river, sitting on the bank, watching the sun rise, etc. Well, dad decided to take us to a place that I had never been too before, so I had to ask the usual questions: Will there be snakes? (I am terrified of snakes and sometimes he goes fishing and sees rattlers!) But he assured me that he had never seen a snake there, and we certainly wouldn't be running into any. Next question: Will we be walking through sage brush? (I have a parenoia of tics. I told you I'm not an outdoors person!) Once again I was assured that there was no sage brush... just some grass that we would walk through. Last question: How far are we going to walk? (No I'm not lazy, I just needed to know which shoes to wear.) So I was told that there was a dirt trail that we would be doing some walking along. Okay, no problem! We left at seven this morning and made our way towards the teton river... as soon as we arrived and got out of the pick-up, I see dad putting on the snake pants- Wait a minute! Didn't he just assure me that there were no snakes where we would be fishing? And now he's wearing the pants, and he has the snake bite kit in his pocket... this wasn't so reassuring.

Well at least when we left the pick-up, I saw a dirt trail in front of me... it lasted about ten feet then came to an abrupt stop. All I saw from there was SAGE BRUSH! And sure enough, we went climbing through it. Oh, and is this the grass he was talking about?

Yes, it was like a jungle, inbetween the patches of sage brush. Jamie gives a nice documentary of the jungle in the video below:

But this wasn't the end... even the jungle and the sage brush ended, and we were left to forge the river!

It was cold!! And deep! But we survived :)
So I was totally dumb to believe anything my dad said! haha But all in all, it turned out to be a success. Because regardless of the soaking wet pants, the horseflies, the RATTLE SNAKE THAT WE DID SEE, the dead grasshoppers, the sage brush, and the head-high grass....

We did catch some fish!

We got to spend quality time as a family!

And enjoyed the beautiful scenery around us :)

YOU MAKE ME LAUGH!!!

This was hilarious. Your dad did exactly what my dad would do... say anything to get you out there!

I'm proud of you for going and smiling while you were there. I think I will make Aly read this post because we are heading out the door (in 15 min) to go camping and she's NOT happy! ("Mom, I HATE nature! Why exactly are we going?" etc.)

PS -- go to http://smellychelli.blogspot.com/2008/06/rockin-boat.html to read my posting about boating in Ririe Res. & seeing rattle snakes...
